When Linda Adey first took part in a POUND class, she decided it was the ideal workout for her.

“I was hooked right away, it was just so much fun,” she said. “It’s the most fun I’ve ever had exercising.”

Adey is now a POUND instructor, and she’s o ering people a chance to give it a try, for free, on Jan. 5.

“It has loud rocking music, and there’s energy,” she said. “It’s for any ages and tness levels, and it’s very easy to modify if you have speci c health problems. Anybody can do it.

“If you come stressed, or in a bad mood, it’s gone by the time you’re done.”

Adey took classes at the Rath-eastlink Community Centre for about eight months, while using a knee scooter due to a mountain-biking injury. She enjoyed it so much, she trained to be an instructor. “ ere’s no competition, it’s just fun.

“It is choreographed, but I nd this easier to follow than Zumba. On one verse you work one side of the body, and on the next verse you work the other. It’s more repetitive and you can shout out verbal cues too.

“It involves a lot of cardio and strength training, with squats and lunges.”

POUND incorporates movements inspired by Pilates and yoga, and participants hold lightly weighted sticks, called Ripstix, which they often hit together or hit the oor with. e tness program was created in 2011 by two women who were recreational drummers. When they were forced to drum without a stool, squatting over the drum kit, they realized there was a way to combine drumming and exercise.

Adey will be o ering free 15-minute demo classes on Jan. 5 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Douglas Street Recreation Centre. Sticks will be provided. Classes begin Jan. 7, and will be held Mondays at 5:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m.

ose who want to take part can pay a monthly membership or a drop-in fee.

“is is for anybody, not just people who are extremely t,” Adey said. “I’m 49 and I feel I’m a good example of an average woman.”
