First she was nothin’ but a hound dog and a ea-bitten puppy but Miss Myrtle Mae is now the centre of attraction as a calendar girl.

A little ea-bitten puppy who came about as the result of a breeding accident, has risen to the stature of calendar girl.

Miss Myrtle Mae, a redtick coonhound mix from Belmont, is featured in the 2019 Global Pets calendar. A photo of her, taken by Mountain Primitive, represents the month of August.

“It was really exciting to have her picture chosen,” said Morgan Heckbert, one of Miss Myrtle Mae’s people. “ ere were more than 4,000 photos entered, and there were so many cute animals.”

Winners were chosen by Global Pet Foods, at the national level.

Before Miss Myrtle Mae joined her family, Heckbert didn’t think a hound was the right dog for them. Her boyfriend, Mitchell Currie, convinced her to drive to Yarmouth with him to look at the pups on Dec. 4, 2017.

When they arrived, they saw four-month-old pups, living in an outdoor pen and covered in eas.

“When they came out, she stuck close,” said Heckbert. “She had a big, oppy face and looked really cute.

“I’m so glad we have her now. Her attitude is unreal. She’s a real people dog, and she’s such a snuggle bug. She’s so loving, everybody likes her. She’s very smart, and she amazes me every day with how great a dog she is.”

A kitten joined the family around the same time, and the animals quickly bonded. ere is also an older cat in the home, who loves dogs.

Even though Myrtle is a big dog, she loves being picked up and carried around.

“She’s de nitely changed my view on hounds,” said Heckbert. “I know I lucked out with her, but she’s given me a soft spot for hounds”

e calendar, sold at Global Pet Foods, is $3.99 and all proceeds from those sold in Truro, Sydney and Stellarton go to Coastal K9 Rescue Society.
