Sascha Berliner, 16, is the only Nova Scotian chosen for a trade and development mission to Peru as part of Junior Team Canada.

Sascha Berliner is only 16, but she’s preparing to head o on her rst international trade and development mission.

Recently, she learned she was the only Nova Scotian chosen to take part in a Junior Team Canada mission to Peru in February. She was chosen from hundreds of applicants and will be among a team of 30.

“I’m extremely excited,” said the Bible Hill girl. “I’m really interested in global a airs and international policy.

“I’m nervous, too, because I’ve never worked with something like this, where I have to network at lot.”

Applicants for the trip had to apply, sharing information on how they could contribute, why they want to represent their region, how they could use the experience to give back to their community, and what they feel are the most pressing issues when it comes to development.

“It’s a 10-day trip and it’ll be my rst time in that area, so I’ve been reading a lot about Peru,” she said.

During the mission, team members will meet with business, government, education and community leaders. ey will showcase educational opportunities in Canada, taking part in school visits, presentations and meetings.

Team members will work to identify trade opportunities for Canadian companies, and after returning home they will prepare reports that will be distributed to government, business and community contacts.

“ e Trans Paci c Partnership involves Peru, and it’s important to have a closer connection,” said Sascha.

“I think this can bene t Colchester County because we exchange information and contacts.

“I think this trip will be very tiring, but in the best way possible.”

Each member of the team must also raise $4,500, so Sascha is looking for businesses and individuals interested in being sponsors. Global Vision will provide tax receipts for sponsorship.
