Return to Marion Bridge

New Truro theatre company bringing production to the stage

Samantha Madore felt theatre was calling her back. She didn’t ignore the call.

She and Jennie Johnson recently formed Decoy eatre, and the theatre company’s inaugural production, Marion Bridge, will be staged at the Marigold Cultural Centre in March.

“We decided we want to do one or two shows a year, so to make it o cial we created a theatre company,” said Madore.

“I have a personal attachment to Marion Bridge. When I was at Neptune eatre school we did Marion Bridge and I loved the story. It’s such a relatable play.”

Marion Bridge tells the story of three estranged sisters who return to Cape Breton, where their mother is dying. They look at what they wanted to be and what their mother wanted for them and learn about why they’ve become the people they are.

Madore is playing Agnes, the eldest sister, an actress who often has a drink in her hand. Sacha Brake has taken the role of eresa, the middle sister, who is a nun; and Louise, the youngest sister and a social mist, is played by Emma Smit-geraghty.

“Getting to see the family dynamics is great,” said Madore.

Marion Bridge was written by Daniel Macivor and Decoy eatre’s production is directed by Jennie Johnson.

Lori Byrne, an interior designer, is using her creative skills to handle set design.

“Every time I’m doing a production I ask myself what I’m doing, then I remember how much I love theatre,” said Madore. “When I took a break, I noticed how much I really missed it.”

She hopes Decoy eatre will create opportunities for script development and local theatre. It will focus on Canadian-based shows.

Marion Bridge will be staged March 7-8 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased through Ticketpro at https:// www.ticketpro.ca/ or at the Marigold Cultural Centre box o ce.
