Stone Park, P.E.I. edges Truro in girls’ final of CEC leadership tourney
Junior hoop teams squared o in the CEC leadership junior basketball tournament recently and several local teams did very well.
TRURO, N.S. — The Truro Panthers ran the table with a 4-0 record to capture top honours at the 30th annual CEC leadership junior boys basketball tournament last week.
The Panthers went 3-0 in the round robin with wins over the Bible Hill Huskies, Halifax Central and South Colchester Wolves.
In the championship game, the Panthers downed Hebbville 55-39. Zach Sylliboy led Truro in the final with 13 points, while Lee Morrison added seven and Quinn Hayden chipped in nine. Hebbville’s Owen Parsons led all scorers with 20 points. Truro’s Tino Beals was player of the game.
Morrison was the recipient of the Bruce Macquarrie memorial award as MVP, while Erik Hayden was named team all-star.
On the girls side, the Panthers settled for a second-place finish, dropping a 43-42 nail-biter to Stone Park, P.E.I., in the final. Emma Ross led the Panthers in the gold-medal game with 12 points, while Jenna Adams hooped 11. Player of the game Abby Mcdonald scored 19 points for Stone Park.
Truro defeated the Bible Hill Huskies 50-49 in a semifinal.
Dara Mccabe of Stone Park was the Bruce Macquarrie award recipient and Mcdonald was team all-star.
The tournament featured 14 teams (eight boys and six girls) and more than 170 players. It was organized by CEC’S Grade 12 physical education (leadership) class.
