Truro road dangerous for early morning drivers

TRURO, N.S. — A Truro woman is warning drivers to watch for unmarked hazards after encountering a wide, deep hole on William Barnhill Drive Monday morning.

Megan White was driving along a section of the road, between Industrial and Glassey avenues, around 7:30 a.m. on the wet morning when she saw a hole that reached halfway across the road.

“I was doing the 50km-per-hour speed limit and by the time I saw this hole I was about six feet away from it,” she said. “I slammed on the brakes, but I hit it hard enough that the truck’s going to need an alignment. There was a six- to nine-inch drop.

“I had a previous injury to my back so it’s going to be sore for a while, too.”

White is wondering how many people in small cars had their vehicles damaged when they went into the hole.

“I have my traffic control certificate and I know they should have had signs up,” she said. “Maybe gravel was washed out by the rain, but an uneven, exposed section of road like this still should have been signed. I think it’s a hazard for the community.”

By 11 a.m. on Monday the hole had been filled with gravel but no signs warning of a bump had been erected.

On Jan. 14, the Town of Truro posted on Facebook, stating work was being done on that section of road to install services to a property.
