BROOKFIELD, N. S. – Students and staff at South Colchester Academy honoured the memory of a former student by naming a basketball tournament after him.

The school recently hosted the “Mikwite’tmnej njikmaminu Angus Paul Tournament,” which translates to “Let’s Remember our Brother Angus Paul.” Angus passed away suddenly, due to health complications, in 2016.

“Angus Paul was an athlete who was passionate about sport and competing,” said Shelley Roberts, a teacher at SCA. “Angus excelled at basketball and track and field at SCA, playing on the junior team for three years and on the high school team for one year. He demonstrated incredible sportsmanship and was an active member of the school community. Angus always showed respect and love for his competitors and the game.”

Eight teams took part in the tournament. Pugwash won gold, while Hants North took silver and SCA bronze. Teams from Advocate, Musquodoboit, Tatamagouche, Pictou and Truro were also part of the event.

Members of Angus’ family watched some of the games and presented awards.

Members of the basketball team prepared a statement for the tournament program, which read:

“Angus Paul was well-known around SCA. He was often seen with a basketball in his hands and

always had a smile on his face. We have dedicated our tournament to Angus because he was very invested in the sport and enjoyed every second of it. Angus also spent his free time participating in the Special Olympics, wearing his number 3. There has recently been an award dedicated to him awarded to a student who demonstrates the determination and dedication that Angus put into everything he did.”
