TRURO, N. S. – It means more work but Truro CAO Mike Dolter is enthusiastic about being elected to the board of the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA).

“It’s great because you’re elected by your peers from across the country,” he said. “It also gives me the opportunity to take things I think are important, especially for smaller municipalities, to the board. It’s important to make sure our members have the tools they need to support their councils and residents.

“It’s a little more work but I’m looking forward to it. I’ll spend a few evenings doing extra stuff, but it will benefit communities. It’s important to be involved if you want to improve things. I’m very grateful for the support of council on this.”

Dolter was elected during the CAMA annual general meeting on May 28 in Québec City. He now represents Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. One person ran against him for the position.

Jeff Renaud, incoming CAMA president and CAO for the Town of St. Stephen, N. B., commented on Dolter’s appointment, saying, “His experience in the military and with municipal administration, especially in the field of finance and improved funding models for municipalities, makes him a valuable addition to our national board.”

Dolter was with the Canadian Forces for 21 years, working as a logistics finance officer in Canada and on peacekeeping operations. He was also comptroller at Canadian Forces Base Kingston. In 2005 he left the forces and became CAO for his hometown of Corner Brook, N. L.

In 2014, he moved to Truro to work as the town’s CAO.

He is currently serving his second four-year term as vicepresident of the Nova Scotia Association of Municipal Administrators. He is also a director for the Property Valuation Service Corporation of Nova Scotia.

The only other seat that became open on the board this year was for New Brunswick. Marc Melanson, city manager of Dieppe, was elected to that position, with no one running against him.
