Affordable Seafood shop opening in Truro

- HARRY SULLIVAN TRURO NEWS

TRURO, N. S. – A Malagash fisherman is planning to offer seafood lovers a break by providing a less expensive option.

“Right now, everything is too expensive,” James Doucette said, of other sources for seafood.

One example, he said, are lobster prices that typically run about $14 per lb. except around special occasions such as Mother’s Day.

Doucette is planning to open his store this Saturday, June 1 across from the Truro Mall on Robie Street called Affordable Seafood.

He has been fishing oysters and clams for more than a decade, which he sells along with other products out of trucks.

“That’s getting harder on it, that’s why I’m trying to get away from it,” he said.

Doucette has also operated a small shop outside his home in Malagash but said it doesn’t generate enough business.

“I shut it down because I wanted to move to Truro where the people are,” he said. “I’ve been mobile for 10 or 15 years and I’ve always wanted to open a shop in Truro.”

Doucette plans to sell both live and cooked lobster, lobster rolls, fish cakes, chowders, scallops, oysters, clams and mussels along with such fish as salmon, haddock, halibut and more.

As much as possible his products will be fresh but Doucette said some of it will be fresh-frozen as well.

An example of the “affordable seafood” for which his shop is named is that he plans to keep his lobster price at about $8.50 per/ lb., even after the local fishing season closes.

“I want to keep people coming in, right,” he said. “Right now, everything is too expensive.”

Doucette expects to start off with three full-time employees plus himself and said he will reevaluate things after a few months of operation.

“Well, that depends on the people of Truro. I’ll stay there till Christmas and if I make money I’ll keep doing it. But if I don’t, I’m done.,” he said.

“I don’t know how it is going to go, honestly. So, hopefully it’s pretty good.”
