Bible Hill recreation director moving on to join RCMP

BIBLE HILL, N. S. – Cody Brown has enjoyed his time as Bible Hill’s parks and recreation director, but he’s decided it is time for a major change.

He’ll soon leave for the RCMP Training Academy in Regina to prepare for a new career.

“Policing is something I had in my head since high school,” he said. “I really enjoy being in recreation, so I decided to do this for a while and see if I was still interested in policing.”

The interest was there so he began the lengthy application process and has now been accepted.

Mitchell Bell, clerk and treasurer with the village, believes Brown has qualities that will make him an excellent RCMP officer.

“He’s great at public speaking and dealing with members of the public,” he said. “He can resolve problems and conflicts and is great with details and dealing with people.”

Brown wanted to remain to organize this year’s Canada Day parade so his final day on the job will be July 2.

“This is a wonderful position and community,” he said. “I would have been happy to remain if things hadn’t worked out with the RCMP.

“I’m excited about this. The RCMP has a good international reputation and it’s nice to be part of something like that.

“I’m really interested in community policing.”

Brown, who grew up in Milford and has a kinesiology degree, has been the village’s parks and recreation director since autumn 2015. He’s led snowshoe hikes, started the Back to School Bash, helped plan trail expansions, organized summer day camps and Canada Day parades, and taken part in many other community activities. He’s also been involved in planning upgrades to the natural playground at the Bible Hill Recreation Park.

His interest in recreation and community also led him to give some of his own time with such efforts as Scotia Pool and the Colchester Highland Games and Gathering.

Bell said Brown has helped him a great deal, since he started at the village.

“He was familiar with facilities and programs, so I learned a lot from him, and he did things to such a high standard, I didn’t have to worry about recreation much.

“We’re going to miss him, but this is the best for him, so I wish him luck.”

Plans are for a new parks and recreation director to be hired around mid-june so there will be time to pass the reins.

“I hope I leave things a little better than when I came, and I’m sure the next person will do the same,” added Brown.
