TRURO, N.S. – The absence of a key personality from this week’s lineup at the Atlantic Vitality Expo (AVX) is not dampening enthusiasm for the show, Rath-eastlink Community Centre manager Matt Moore says.

Organizers recently learned Hollywood fitness guru Bob Harper will not be attending as planned because of scheduling conflicts with the filming of this season’s Biggest Loser. But Moore said Harper is being replaced at the AVX by Atlantic Canadian personality Tim Maloney and Acadia University professor and exercise physiologist Dr. Jonathon Fowles “to keep our audience informed and entertained.”

“The purpose of AVX is to celebrate community well-being and provide a platform for recognition for local success stories and community champions,” Moore told the Truro News. “It has become clear that our community doesn’t need a Hollywood celebrity in attendance to prove our values for improved health.”

The AVX is scheduled for today and Friday and, so far, more than 200 people have confirmed attendance for the Wellness Dinner. There will also be more than 75 vendors at the expo and over a dozen workshops, training and program demonstrations, Moore said.

Dr. Jonathon Fowles is a professor and exercise physiologist at Acadia University. His work in the Centre of Lifestyle Studies examines the effects of exercise on health in athletes, the elderly and persons with chronic disease or disability. Fowles has spearheaded initiatives with many organizations such as Diabetes Canada, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, and Heart and Stroke Foundation.

He is currently chairman of the National Advisory Council for Exercise is Medicine Canada.

Tim Maloney is a passionate and engaging performer whose light-hearted musical comedy is aimed at audiences of all ages. Maloney is a multi-faceted entertainer with a colourful, comedic gift for mime, improv, song, dance and theatre.

Maloney first made a name for himself at age four when he began singing and dancing with his family group: Shades of Harmony.

Since those early days, he has gone on to command the stage with lead rolls in a wide range of musicals and special events, including KV players, The Charlottetown Festival, Festival By the Sea, and Theatre New Brunswick. He’s also a regular on TV.
