TRURO, N.S. – A story of hardship and the magic of Christmas is coming to the stage.

A Christmas Dollhouse is a family musical featuring several Nova Scotia performers.

It’s written by Vladimir Sitnikov and Cheryl Edgett and is based on the book of the same name by Halifax writer Richard Rudnicki.

“I think people of all ages will enjoy the show,” said Sitnikov, who has a Masters in classical guitar and is one of the performers. “There are several singers and some duets. One of the pieces, Friends Forever, often leaves people with goosebumps.”

A Christmas Dollhouse tells a story of a girl called Dot, whose family is having a difficult time. She dreams of having a beautiful dollhouse that’s being raffled but doesn’t have money to buy a ticket. The story is about friendship, forgiveness, kindness, celebration and community.

“This is a great country overall and I like to be part of its stories,” said Sitnikov, who lives in Fall River.

“I grew up on the seashore in Russia. I was living in Toronto, but when I did a tour in Newfoundland I was sitting on Signal Hill, watching the ocean, and I decided it was time to move back near the sea. I moved to Nova Scotia five years ago.”

His wife, who he met while at university, teaches piano. They’ve shared their love of music with their two daughters.

“I think being involved in music is incredible for children,” he said. “They don’t have to become professionals. Music is a positive influence in people’s lives.”

Emma Poulsen plays the part of Dot in the musical, Rich O’quinn is Wallis, and Mia Goedkoop has the role of Caleigh.

Along with Sitkinov, musicians include Cheryl Edgett, Mike Cowie, Shannon Quinn, Rick Hebb, Julie Thomas, and Melanie Cameron.

The Souvenir Dance Ensemble, based at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, will also take part.

The soundtrack was recorded at FMP Matrix by Scott Ferguson, ECMA recording engineer of the year for 2019.

“There are several singers and some duets. One of the pieces, Friends Forever, often leaves people with goosebumps.”
