Drake shows his stuff at Bible Hill competition

- LYNN CURWIN

BIBLE HILL, N.S. – The first time she met a Rhodesian ridgeback Chantalle Twohig was captivated by the breed.

Now she and Drake, whose registered name is Trumphill’s Uncharted Journey, take part in dog shows, hikes, obedience events and more.

“He’s my first dog,” said Twohig. “I was looking at breeds I liked a lot when I was trying to decide what to get. I was at one show and saw a dog standing there and it was just ‘Wow!’ I asked the man with the dog to talk to me about the breed and I also met the breeder.”

After researching the breed Twohig, who lives in Hillsborough, N.B., spent time in Wittenburg with breeder Hazel Parker and her dogs.

“I was first impressed with how regal these dogs are,” she said. “They have a commanding presence and I like their attitude. They’re independent thinkers; you have to make them think it’s their idea to do something. They’re also funny and smart.

“My husband and I are outdoorsy people and wanted something that could keep up with us, too.”

Drake joined their family six years ago. When he was old enough, he was neutered and Twohig didn’t think he’d ever be a show dog. Then, the Canadian Kennel Club started offering conformation classes for spayed and neutered dogs. Drake now has his championship, but that’s not the only activity he takes part in. He’s done rally obedience, scent detection, lure coursing, and hikes with his humans. He also has his Canine Good Neighbour certificate.

Drake was in Bible Hill for the Cobequid Dog Club show Oct. 12-13 and left the ring with another large ribbon.

“He’s family; he’s my boy,” said Twohig. “Taking part in shows is something we do for fun.

“This is definitely the right breed for me.”
