Selects fifth at Pictou County tournament

TRURO, N.S. – The Fundy Highland bantam AA Subway Selects posted a 2-1-1 record last weekend at the Subway AA Cup female hockey tournament in Pictou County.

Game 1 saw the Selects outshoot EDZA Western Phantoms 35-8, but were held to a scoreless tie. Josie Dunn was player of the game.

In Game 2, the Selects fell 2-0 to the Valley Wild. Player of the game for the Selects was Kenzie Greencorn.

Game 3 saw Lily Leblanc score the winning goal in the third period in a 2-1 win over Metro East Inferno. Maddi Beson also scored for the winners and Bree Macpherson was chosen player of the game.

In their other game, Willa Evans and Erin Macneil – on the power play – scored in a 2-0 victory over Central Storm, P.E.I.

Assists were provided by Brooke Thomson, Lauren Smith and Julia Macdonald. Evans was named player of the game.

Gabby Arsenault provided solid goaltendin­g in all four games.

The Selects finished fifth overall in round-robin play. The top four teams advanced to the semifinal round.

In recent league action, the Subway Selects began their regular season with a pair of road wins.

Game 1 saw the line of Olivia Marks, Greencorn and Beson do all the damage offensivel­y in a 4-1 win over Metro East Inferno. Marks recorded the hat trick, while Greencorn scored the other goal to go along with two assists and Beson added three helpers.

Game 2 saw Thomson score the winner in a 2-1 win over Metro West Force. Beson also scored for the Selects and Arsenault was the winning goaltender in both games.
