Varsity Cougars nab tournament title
TRURO, N.S. – It was a goldmedal performance for the Cobequid Cougars at the Mcdonalds Golden Arches high school girls volleyball tournament last week in Antigonish.
The CEC varsity team captured top honours with a 25-13, 25-20 win over Colonel Gray from Charlottetown in the final. It marked the ninth straight year CEC won the tournament, and avenged an earlier loss to Colonel Gray in round-robin play (25-27, 25-18, 13-15).
The JV Cougars finished third with a three-set win over SAERC in the bronze-medal match.
The varsity girls finished second in their pool with a 3-1 record. They had straight-set wins over Inverness (25-9, 2514) and Dr. J.H. Gillis #2 (25-11, 25-13), a tough three-set win over Riverview (25-16, 19-25, 15-9), and a close three-set loss to Colonel Gray. They defeated Northumberland 25-13, 25-19 in a quarter-final match and the CEC JV side 27-25, 25-8 in a semifinal.
The JV Cougars finished first in their pool with straight-set wins over Dr. J.H. Gillis #1, Sydney Academy, SAERC and Northumberland. They received a bye into the semifinal. They had the CEC #1 team on the ropes in the first set before falling in a close game.
Marlee Mcquillan was selected player of the match in the final, while Jenna Adams was the player of the match in the bronze-medal game. Hannah Huntley, Molly Marquis, and Ella Boudreau were named tournament all-stars, while Sydney Davidson received the Melissa Landry Memorial Award as the tournament MVP.
This weekend, both teams will travel to Sydney for the Sydney Academy Invitational Tournament.
