New executive director in place at the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre
“We’ll continue working to get the message out that we’re open to all genders, because that’s something a lot of people still aren’t aware of.”

TRURO, N.S. – Education, awareness and support all play a role in Sarah Flemming’s new position. On Feb. 3 she took over as executive director of the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre (CSAC).
“I’m excited about this,” she said. “I’ve always had an interest in the centre and the work it does. The people who were here did a great job and I’ll pick up from where things were and put my own spin on some things.”
Flemming was with the Colchester-east Hants branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association for about two years, working in community and housing, and with youth. This allowed her to make connections she can use in her new role.
“I would love to hear from people interested in sharing resources and interested in talking about potential collaborations and I would love to see an expansion with support groups,” she said.
“We’ll continue working to get the message out that we’re open to all genders, because that’s something a lot of people still aren’t aware of. No one’s an island. We’re here to support people that need the help.”
She noted there is a broad spectrum when it comes to inappropriate behaviour.
“It can be nuances in language, inappropriate touching, the person who stands too close in line. Most women have experienced something.
“It’s important to teach our boys about consent and boundaries, starting at a young age. Previous generations didn’t talk about things like this much; parents are doing a better job protecting their kids now.”
Flemming has two sons of her own, aged three and 13. Her free time is enjoyed with family, and doing yoga, walking and reading.
The CSAC currently has two counsellors on staff, Julian Macleod and Nicole Williams. Their caseloads are full and there is a wait list. Flemming hopes to hire more staff in the future. She’dd also welcome a couple of more board members.
People aged 12 to 16 can access the centre’s services, with parental consent. Those 16 and older can arrange counselling themselves.
The CSAC is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday and can be reached by calling 902-897-4366.
