Communication breakthrough
Colchester and Cumberland counties getting rural broadband network
TRURO, N.S. – If things go according to plan, high-speed Internet will be available throughout rural Colchester and Cumberland counties within three years.
The counties are teaming up with Xplornet Communication and Develop Nova Scotia on the project, which involves Xplornet putting almost 700 kms of optic fibre in place, offering up to 100Mbps fibre to home and fixed wireless services.
Xplornet’s Executive Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, Jeff Burlock, described the municipal collaboration as very positive
“They have a vision for rural community that fits with ours and together we’re going to make it happen,” he said.
The goal is to reach more than 21,700 households and businesses currently considered underserved, the municipalities announced, in a joint news release. Another 2,300 addresses will have access to improved satellite service that will reach up to 50 Mbps.
Ron Smith, president of the Truro and Colchester Chamber of Commerce hailed the announcement as a milestone development for the two municipalities. Smith said he was thrilled with the news, which will see essential high-speed Internet service provided to thousands of un-serviced and under-serviced homes and businesses in the region.
“The Chamber has been lobbying for better access to high-speed Internet for a number of years and today’s announcement will create new opportunities to grow and attract business in this region,” he said.
The counties will invest a combined $6 million over the next four years in exchange for 20 years of dedicated fibre, which will be used for community services and economic development. The municipalities will not have ownership in the network or be responsible for its operation or upkeep.
Nova Scotia Internet Funding Trust has approved an investment of $19.9 million, based on project costs that total $48.5 million. Xplornet will spend $34.3 million.
As part of the Internet to Nova Scotia Initiative, Develop Nova Scotia will monitor construction and system performance.
