A boost for bodies and the environment
TRURO, N.S. – As a surfer, Will Mcclafferty spend a lot of time around the water, and he’s seen a lot of plastic waste.
He decided to be part of a business that would benefit the environment, and came up with the idea for Endeavour Wellness Products.
Endeavour offers hemp seeds and hemp hearts in compostable packaging.
“I love surfing and hiking and when I’m out I’m always picking up garbage, so with Endeavour there was a conscious choice not to use products we’d see on the ground,” she said. “Our mission is to offer nutritious products that support health, people and the world.
“We were able to get labels that had ink made with vegetable oil. That’s impressed people because not many know that’s a printing medium.”
One of the difficulties Endeavour faces is that because the compostable bags and labels cost more than plastic, the cost of their products has to be higher than some brands.
“It makes it hard to be competitive but, knowing it’s better for the environment, I wouldn’t have done it any other way,” said Mcclafferty. “I wasn’t sure if people would see the value, but from the feedback we’re getting we realize it’s important to them.”
Hemp products were chosen as the first line because hemp is environmentally friendly, grows well in Atlantic Canada, and the seeds and hearts are nutritious.
Endeavour products can be found at Honeycomb Health Market and Totally Local, and occasionally at the Truro Farmers’
Market. It is also being used at some Booster Juice locations, including Truro’s.
“I hope to get it into more places soon,” said Mcclafferty.
“One thing I hope to do with this is give people I don’t know a reason to smile when they wake up.”
