Top athletes being honoured by TSHS

TRURO, N.S. – The Truro Sport Heritage Society will host its 36th annual awards dinner Sunday, March 1 at the Best Western Glengarry in Truro.

The dinner acknowledges accomplishments of local athletes and volunteers from the Town of Truro and Colchester County for 2019. There will be 22 awards presented for a wide variety of categories and ranging in ages, from under 15 to over 50 years.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

Bruce Rainnie, president and CEO of the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, will emcee the event.

OUTSTANDING HIGH SCHOOL TEAM CEC girls varsity soccer

The Cougars won their first provincial NSSAF championship in 27 years. Along the way they finished first in league play and won the regional title. Their record of 17-1-2, with their only loss coming in exhibition play, was highlighted by their offensive and defensive play resulting in 67 goals for and only nine against. The team also had 13 shutouts.

CEC boys volleyball

CEC won its fifth consecutive NSSAF provincial title and sixth in eight years. The team finished the season with 42 wins and eight losses in match play. The Cougars often give back to the community with senior players donating their time during the annual Cougar Volleyball Camp for younger players in the region.

CEC girls track & field

The CEC team won their fifth straight NSSAF provincial championship and eighth in nine years. The Cougars won the provincial banner with an incredible 77-point difference between them and the second-place team. Along the way, they collected eight individual medals as well as winning both the 4-by-100m and the 4-by-400m relays.

OUTSTANDING ATHLETE (MALE 16-20) Noah Berniquer

Noah excels at javelin and the long/triple jumps. In districts he placed first in javelin, long jump and triple jump. At regionals he repeated with three firsts in those disciplines, and at provincials again three golds. At Athletics NS team trials he won gold and at the Legion Nationals, a well-deserved silver. He set a personal best in 2019 javelin provincials, setting a new CEC record in the process. He was the NSSAF champ in both long and triple jumps.

Adam Mceachren

is accomplished in curling, volleyball, soccer and track and field. He and his team have won multiple curling championships at the provincial level. He won a track and field silver medal in senior shot put and won gold as provincial champs in volleyball. He has numerous personal awards in curling from the club level to provincial and national championships.

Jared Mcisaac

Jared was drafted 36th overall in the second round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings. He has played for Canada's national junior team in a number of different venues, and won gold at this year’s world junior championship. As a member of the Halifax Mooseheads, he repeatedly led his team in scoring among defensemen.

Thomas Vickers

Thomas competes in volleyball, badminton and track and field. His volleyball club captured the VNS boys' championship and Thomas also captured the under-18 championship MVP award. He won an NSSAF provincial silver medal in senior singles badminton. He was the CEC male volleyball MVP, badminton MVP and the Ron O'flaherty Scholar athlete.

OUTSTANDING CLUB TEAM (15 YEARS AND UNDER) Team Macisaac curling

Team Macisaac captured the U15 provincial title for the second year in a row with an undefeated record. Coached by Craig Burgess, Calan, Evan, Owain, and Chris can be described as a group of dedicated young men who practise daily at their home club in Truro, while also helping out with pre-juniors, ice maintenance and other chores around the club.

CC Riders U15 A girls soccer

This team finished first in their league of the “A” division of Soccer Nova Scotia. The depth of the team was remarkable to coaches. The Riders did not have to rely on one particular player, but the group as a whole functioned at top capacity. They took home the 2019 Team award from the CC Riders organization.

Cougar Dome high performance tennis

The Cougar Dome high performance tennis team posted some of the best-ever results at the Atlantic indoor tennis championships in 2019. Of seven athletes who competed, three brought home titles and several had great performances.

OUTSTANDING JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Redcliff Middle School girls table tennis

The RMS team, comprised of then-grade 6 students Chloe Garcia, Brooke Williams and Madelyn Maclaughlin competed against older students and still won the regional championship as well as the NSSAF provincial junior title. The team defeated well known powerhouse Cape Breton Highlands Centre/academy on their way to the championship.

Bible Hill Junior High School girls volleyball

The team’s only defeat of the season came in their own tournament’s championship game. In other tournament play, the Huskies were successful with four gold medals. Additional highlights of the season include going undefeated in pre-season, exhibition and league matches and going undefeated in district and regional championship play.
