Karlee Burgess flies Canada's flag in Russia
TRURO, N.S. – Local curler Karlee Burgess and her teammates sit in second spot at the World Junior Curling Championships in Russia with a 6-1 record. Korea leads at 7-0.
Team Canada lost their opener 8-7 to Japan in their first round-robin game on Feb. 15, but have won every game since at the championships in Krasnoyarsk.
Canada's men sat at 7-1 yesterday, good for top spot in their group.
The women’s foursome consists of Burgess as third, second Emily Zacharias, lean and vice-skip Lauren Lenentine, skip Mackenzie Zacharias and reserve Rachel Erickson.
Burgess qualified for Team Canada after winning last month’s national competition with Manitoba in Langley, B.C., beating her cousin Lindsey in the process, who played for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Burgess’s rink is one of 20 men’s and women’s national sides playing in Krasnoyarsk from Feb. 15 – 22.
As the round robin stage draws to a close, Team Canada’s women are ranked second and the men are first.
The Canadian women have yet to face Latvia and Korea to wrap up round-robin play. The men will play Scotland in their final round-robin matchup.
The men’s and women’s semifinals are scheduled for Feb. 21 and the finals are on Feb. 22.
