Drama continues down the stretch

- Gerry Hale Gerry Hale is president and media relations coordinator of the Truro Bearcats junior A hockey club.

The South Shore tour proved to be very rewarding.

The Bearcats returned with a pair of wins, both nail-biters in nature. The schedule, which once resembled a marathon, is now a sprint to the finish.

Before the tour got underway, Truro had to square-off against the Crushers. A strong start and a territorial edge were not enough to pull off a home win last Wednesday.

The Bearcats played like a tired team which played too many games. It caught up to them that night.

Resilience is a great thing. The Bearcat bounce-back was on full display in Bridgewater last Friday.

The Bearcats took an early lead and never relinquished it. The team was good on the powerplay and shut out the Lumberjacks when disadvantaged.

Playing with a lead against a team of hungry Lumberjacks is a challenge. Truro stood its ground,

playing solid team hockey to the win.

In Yarmouth, the Bearcats scored a goal each period and held the division leaders to a pair in

the second period.

Again, Truro’s special team play executed – scoring on the power play and denying on the penalty kill. That helped the

Bearcat’s pick up their first win in Yarmouth this season.

It was clearly a feel-good weekend for the Bearcats. It was also for the Pictou County Crushers

and Amherst Ramblers, as reflected in the standings. It’s all about winning.

The Bearcats have five games remaining in regular season play – the next three at home. It’s a perfect time to take care of business.

Friday, the Fredericton Red Wings, formerly the St. Stephen County Aces, make their inaugural visit to the RECC.

The Red Wings currently sit third in the North Division, fourth overall in the MHL. They defeated Truro in Fredericton last October – that was then.

Saturday, the Yarmouth Mariners are in town for their fourth and final regular season appearance. It should be a dandy.

This Saturday, the Bearcats will acknowledge the team members who will graduate from junior hockey. The organization appreciates the contribution of each.

Next Wednesday, the Bearcats wrap up their home schedule when the Valley Wildcats are in town. All home games start at 7 p.m.

The suspense intensifies.
