The game is not on at the oval

Sticks and pucks against the rules

The oval at Civic Square is a skating rink, not a hockey rink.

That distinction was the subject of discussion at Truro Town Council during a recent presentation of a Parks, Recreation and Culture report.

“It’s a safety matter,” said Recreation director Ashley Simms. “Everybody is trying to get out and active this winter, especially during the pandemic, so we ask that everyone respects the rules.”

Some people have been bringing sticks and pucks to the oval, despite being banned, which Simms said makes the rink unsafe for others who properly trying to enjoy it.

Mayor Bill Mills said the oval is supposed to be a welcoming place for those of all ages and skating abilities.

“Maybe they’re not as confident as they used to be,” Mills said, referring specifically to seniors using the oval and skating to stay active and enjoy a pleasant winter day.

“Any kind of a distraction, like a puck, could be hazardous for them. We’re asking younger folks not to bring sticks and pucks to the oval.”

Mills quoted CAO Mike Dolter who surmised, during the meeting, why sticks and pucks might be more of a problem this year.

“Our CAO made a good point; last year when people wanted to play shinny or whatever, we were able to let them go down to the stadium and do that free of charge, but with COVID, that complicates matters,” Mills said, adding he wishes they would try to find a safe pond to play shinny on.

REGISTRATION ISSUE

Simms also wanted to remind people about the Covidinitiated pre-registration requirement for the oval, noting it’s a straightforward process once you go to the town’s website www.townoftruro.ca.

“We have a link right on there to register,” she said. “Right now, the number is 25 (allowed at one time), but when public health directives change and gatherings can be larger or smaller, that number will change as well. All they have to do is add their name and their email for tracing purposes, if ever needed.”

Simms said it is important for anyone registering to include the names of family or friends who will be joining them on the oval.

“You have to register each person too,” she said. “Every person needs to be registered so we know the exact number of people coming out.”
