‘It’s been a whirlwind’

Seastrands Salon & Spa is an oasis of calm amidst hair, esthetics boom

- HEATHER LAURA CLARKE

When Lindsay Prowse moved home to Truro after three years living in Ontario, it made perfect sense to set up her new luxury boutique salon and spa in the family-owned building on the corner of Inglis Place and Esplanade, alongside HAF

Footwear Apparel Lifestyle and Jimolly’s Bakery Café.

What came next was a little more challenging.

The well-known Truro building (formerly Keggers) is almost 200 years old, and it wound up taking four coats on the ceiling and six coats

on the walls to finally turn the dark, dreary green into a fresh, crisp white. Paired with soft sunset pinks and sky blues, the space was transformed with

a dreamy, beachy vibe that exudes coastal relaxation.

Lindsay opened Seastrands Salon & Spa on March 15, 2021, and spent the first month working alone in her new space while also interviewing potential employees. Things were looking better than ever when she officially hired stylists Marlee Green and Haleigh Benson, but they completed just one day of work before the province entered another unexpected shutdown.

The trio regrouped and made plans for whenever they would be allowed to reopen, but even that threw them for a loop. When the province made the surprising announcement that hairstyling services could resume, Lindsay was enjoying a leisurely run and worried something was wrong when her phone suddenly started blowing up with messages.

“I thought ‘Oh my gosh! Did someone die?’ But just as quickly as things closed down, they were opening back up, and messages from clients were pouring in.”

Lindsay is grateful the shutdown only lasted a month, and says it’s been “a whirlwind” ever since. The original plan was for her to work five days a week and Morgan and Hayleigh to alternate the other

days, but now all three of them are working 8-12 hour days, five days a week, just trying to catch up on their rebookings — while esthetician Morgan Stevens is busy in her treatment room doing nails, brows and waxing.

“I wasn’t expecting us to be this busy right away, and I keep

pinching myself. This is my dream, and I’m so thankful!”

HAIR EXTENSIONS EXPERT

After training in New York City, Lindsay spends about 80 per cent of her time doing hand-tied hair extensions. These non-invasive, low-maintenance hair extensions are woven into your natural hair without glue or adhesive, giving clients fuller, longer hair they can wash and style normally.

Clients with hair extensions come in every 6-9 weeks to get them moved up as their hair grows, but the extensions themselves easily last over a year. Lindsay’s worn hair extensions for three years now, and says she can’t imagine life without them.

She says adding extra hair to your head used to be a secretive practice — similar to getting injectables like Botox

— but now more people are proudly talking about how their hair extensions provide

extra thickness and length.

“Extensions give people so much confidence. I’ve had at least three people cry (happy tears) in the chair,” says Lindsay. “Lots of women lose hair from pregnancy or medical conditions, and I absolutely love seeing how happy and

confident they are with their

extensions.”
