Shop local in Downtown Truro

Support local businesses and shop in style in Downtown Truro

- BY SAM MADORE

Small businesses are the beating heart pumping life into Downtown Truro this holiday season.

There is no denying that small, locally-owned shops and restaurants were hit hard throughout the pandemic. Shopping local is an incredible way to support our business community, so that they can continue to thrive into the future.

“Local businesses are often independently owned, employ people in the community, pay local taxes and are often the ones supporting local charity events and programs,” says Miriah Kearney, owner of My Home Mercantile and member of the Downtown Truro Partnership board of directors.

“Truro has one of the nicest downtowns in Atlantic Canada. It has so many beautiful shops, local cafes and restaurants, stunning public spaces and a collaborative energy that permeates throughout the community. People can park for free and easily walk around and find so many great stores or stop for a delicious bite to eat.”

The Downtown Truro Partnership will be hosting an evening shopping event on Nov. 26, where participating businesses will be open late until 9 p.m. while carolers sing holiday favourites throughout the downtown area, and shoppers can win prizes for making purchases and finding an elusive missing reindeer.

There will be horse and wagon rides that evening departing from the Truro Farmers’ Market which must be reserved in advance at downtowntruro.ca. The Farmers’ Market will also be hosting an East Coast Artisans evening market on Nov. 26 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Downtown Dollars are another easy way to support local businesses. They work like gift cards and can be used at over 100 participating restaurants, shops and services throughout Downtown Truro. On Nov. 20, the Downtown Truro Partnership will be offering incentives for people who purchase downtown dollars at the Truro Farmers’ Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It’s an easy way to keep money local and help our community grow,” says Rochelle Roberts, executive director of the Downtown Truro Partnership. “We have such amazing merchants and services available to choose from and be inspired by. And Downtown Dollars make a perfect gift for anyone on your list because they can be used at so many different locally-owned businesses in our downtown core.”

In addition to attending the designated shopping events, there are many more ways to support local businesses this time of year:

• Tell your friends and neighbours about your favourite spots

• Help spread the word about upcoming events

• Eat at a local restaurant or get takeout when you can

• Leave reviews for local businesses online

• Follow local businesses on social media and interact with them

“The grass is greener where you water it,” says Kearney. “And if you want to have a thriving place to live, you have to support the businesses that are foundational to the community. This goes for every season of the year.”
