MEET THE MAKERS Making magical jewelry with lunar inspiration at Crescent Beauty Designs

- LAURA CHURCHILL DUKE SALTWIRE NETWORK

Madison Denton had always considered creating small jewelry as a business, but never thought it would go as far as it has.

Denton is a 16-year-old Stewiacke resident and Grade 11 student at South Colchester Academy. Everything started from the idea of just wanting to make some extra money. It wasn't long before she began selling her products at small markets.

From there, she says it grew into a more compassionate hobby that she grew very fond of really quickly.

“Then, everything just fell into place and started growing more and more,” she says.

When she first began, Denton was looking for a name for her business. Then it came to her.

“One night, I was looking at the bright, beautiful, magical crescent moon. So, as I gazed up at the moon, I thought about how pretty it was, and that's how I came up with the name,” she says.

From then on, Crescent Beauty Designs was born.

Through her business, Denton primarily focuses on making and selling earrings. She says she started by winging it and using her creative mind to make something pretty to learn the art. After that, she started getting ideas from Pinterest or the internet.

All this creating comes naturally to Denton. She was a crafty person growing up and she loves to draw, paint, and do crafty DIYS. Every year, she also makes Christmas ornaments for her family.

Denton says leather earrings are her favourite things to create. She says she only has to use a template to draw out the shape of her desire, cut the shape out and then punch a hole for the jump ring, or clasp.

With her faux leather earrings, she says she has tons of styles to choose from or can even custom make them in terms of style and colour. Of course, she’s always happy to make custom orders with her other designs, too, she says.

Denton says the most challenging thing for her to make are the wire earrings. It isn't easy to bend the wire almost perfectly and then to have to make the second earring only almost identical. It's a lot of work, she says.

The most popular item she has made are her pinecone earrings, sunflower designed studs, and her necklaces.

Denton says she started making pinecones just as something different to sell at the market. She started by making four or five pairs and took them to sell at the Musquodoboit Harbour Farmers Market. After she had her table set up, Denton says a woman approached her and asked if she made all her own earrings. Denton responded, yes.

Then, the pinecone earrings caught her attention.

Denton was then asked if the pinecones were real, and she confidently answered that with a yes.

“She then bought them on the spot. From there, it's been my goal to make more earrings like the pinecones,” says Denton.

Denton has other goals as well. She hopes to keep growing her business in the future, and plans to save the money she earns to help her out later when she needs it. She’s also saving for a car.
