CHEERS to the people of Portapique, who were honoured recently by Lt.-gov. Arthur J. Leblanc with a Community Spirit Award.

The community has been partnering with the Rotary Club of Truro over the past two years on the Portapique Community Build-up + Project to recover after the tragic Nova Scotia attacks on April 18 and 19, 2020.

The past two years have been difficult ones for the community with the restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the horrible events of April 18 and 19, 2020, when a gunman took the lives of 22 people and an unborn baby.

Instead of allowing those horrific events to identify the community, the people rallied together in their sorrow in a positive, forward-looking way by working together to revitalize the Riverside Community Hall and create an adjacent playground.

CHEERS to the Cantabile Society of Truro, which is preparing for its long-awaited concert, Songs of

Inspiration and Hope, at First United Church on April 30 and May 1 at St. Matthew’s United Church in Halifax.

The Cantabile Singers are celebrating 40 years and are doing so after going through two years of COVID restrictions that made singing in choirs very difficult. It’s probably something former director Jeff Joudrey never envisioned when he helped form the organization in 1981.

Over the years, the group has travelled across the Maritimes and was once one of two choirs that sang with Symphony Nova Scotia.

The concert will feature the Cantabile Singers, two children’s choirs and Nova Voce. It will also be another signal that we as a community are emerging from the COVID pandemic — albeit slowly and carefully.

Truro can indeed hold its head up high on the provincial scene as a known musical hotspot — and events such as this and others planned for this summer are another checkmark in that column for the community.

CHEERS to the Truro Major U-15 Bearcats who are hosting the Nova Scotia provincial championships this weekend at Colchester Legion Stadium.

This is the 12th year for the Nova Scotia league, but it’s the first time the Bearcats have been given the opportunity to host the provincial tournament, with the winning club moving on to the Atlantic championships.

The host squad will open the tournament Thursday at noon when they play the Rangers, who are based out of East Hants, while they also play the Dartmouth Whalers, the Wearwell Bombers from Pictou County and the Halifax Wolverines.

A lot of work goes into organizing an event such as this and it’s sure to provide an economic boom to the area with the number of people coming to the community to participate and watch.

It will also be an opportunity to see some of the best U-15 hockey players in Nova Scotia, some of whom will eventually make the jump to major junior, junior A or even higher in the coming years.

Best of luck to all the teams and Go Bearcats Go!
