Bearcats pick up two wins before losing to Mariners

With all things considered, it was a good week for the Bearcats.

The team picked up a pair of wins before suffering a loss to the MHL’S top team.

Last Tuesday, against Miramichi, if you were late to the game, you missed the fireworks. It was explosive.

The Timberwolves scored 15 seconds in, then the Bearcats swarmed the offensive zone, responding with three before the four-minute mark of the game.

The visitors pushed back hard the rest of the way, but timely stops stymied a full comeback. The Bearcats should thank their goalie.

In Amherst Thursday, the Bearcats and Ramblers played even and tight throughout. Two late goals, one an empty-netter, gave the Bearcats a solid 3-1 road win.

To date, the Bearcats have had the upper hand over the Ramblers, winning five of the six outings. These teams meet on Feb. 20, again in Amherst.

Saturday, Truro built up a two-goal lead over the Yarmouth Mariners before the visitors found a way to take a close 4-3 victory.

The Bearcats worked hard from start to finish, but puck management clearly favoured the Mariners who took advantage at every opportunity.

Truro’s special team play got positive results. The team scored two powerplay goals and killed all four Mariner opportunities.

In sport, you can’t make excuses. The Bearcats, because of injury, didn’t have enough legs in the game. Regardless of effort, you can’t present your best cohesiveness with 14 skaters.

This week, the Bearcats are in Edmundston for a makeup game. The Blizzard have a hard-fought victory over the Bearcats to their credit.

Thursday, the team moves on to Summerside to face the Capitals. The Bearcats were victorious in the last meeting.

Sunday, the team travels to Bridgewater to play the South Shore Lumberjacks.

Truro has won three of the previous four meetings, but not the last one.

The game in Amherst on Monday will wrap up this four-game road trip. No team will sympathize with the Bearcats, who expect the best the opposition can throw at them.

Bearcat-of-the-week honours went to forward, Lucas Canning. He scored in all three games picking up five points and being named a Game Star in each. He’s a threat each and every shift. Credit, as well, should go to the goaltending tandem of Connor Martin and Jack Milner.

They provided solid support to the skaters in front of them in all three outings.
