Say hello to Holly Currie
Hello, my name is Holly.
I’m 16 years old, and in my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing and listening to music.
I’m attending school at Musquodoboit Rural High School and one of the courses I’m taking this year is CO-OP. This is a program where students, like me, work in a company or organization to gain work experience in a career they're interested in.
For me, I’ve always been interested in writing. At home, I write poetry to spread awareness on mental health. I also write short stories for fun, but I’ve never written an article before, so when I went to choose my placement the first thing that came to my mind was journalism.
Factual writing hasn’t been my strong suit but going out of my comfort zone and trying new things is.
Going into this, I hope to learn technical, researching and interviewing skills, but the biggest thing I want to achieve during my placement is to improve my factual writing.
I’ve always enjoyed reading news articles; they provide you with information about your community and keep you up to date. When I was younger, I actually helped my grandfather deliver newspapers and I found it fascinating how these pages of information were just conveniently delivered to someone's doorstep where they could just read the articles to keep up with the news.
I just remember sitting in the basement of my grandfather's apartment complex, packaging the newspapers in green plastic bags, and drilling him with questions about how he delivers the newspapers and where he gets them from. When he answered my questions, I always had more.
I’m very eager to learn more about journalism, to see firsthand how these articles are created and what work gets put into them, and I’m very excited to do so at the Truro News.
