Say hello to Dane Matheson
My Name is Dane Matheson.
I am a Grade 12 student at École acadienne de Truro and for my Grade 12 Co-op, I am going to the Saltwire Network’s Truro News.
This will be on every Friday, assuming there’s school, from around 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. starting on March 10.
The reason why I picked journalism as my Co-op is because I really enjoy writing and I seem to be good at reporting and finding information.
I want to be a writer, not necessarily a journalist, but it is a job I've thought about before. I think journalism is something I’d fall back on in case my writing career doesn't work out and while I would still like to be a writer, being a journalist is a strong second choice.
I hope that by doing my Co-op at Saltwire, it could give me good experience in writing and it may also give me opportunities for a future career in journalism.
I’ve always been very interested in reviewing, critiquing and analyzing media like movies, shows and video
games. I’m aware that it isn’t the same thing as journalism, but they do share many similarities like finding information and reporting on a topic.
The main difference is that when writing a review or making critiques, it’s much more about having an argument and being able to prove your point while journalism is much more about reporting on facts.
By doing my Co-op at Saltwire, I hope to learn more about writing and reporting while also having some new experiences in a line of work that I don’t know too much about. So far the Truro News seems like a great place and I’m looking forward to the new memories that I can take into life and use for a better future.
