Juno nominees announced, Halifax ready to host

Wondering who is going to walk the red carpet along with host Nelly Furtado when Halifax hosts the Junos March 24?

The Junos recently announced the 2024 nominees during a livestream­ed event from Toronto.

Montreal pop singer Charlotte Cardin leads the nomination­s with six, followed by Ontario artists Daniel Caesar and Talk with five each.

There are seven Nova Scotian nominees including Jah'mila (Reggae Recording of the Year), the reggae singer and songwriter based in Halifax, and Nova Scotia soprano Barbara Hannigan (Classical Album of the Year, Solo Artist). Halifax's Rich Aucoin is nominated for Electronic Album of the Year*) and Morgan Toney, the Mi'kmaq folk singer-songwriter and fiddler is nominated for (Traditiona­l Roots Album of the Year). Matt Andersen is up for Blues Album of the Year, Mike Murley is nominated for Jazz Album of the Year, Group and Marc Djokic is nominated for Classical Album of the Year.

Shania Twain, Oji-cree singer-songwriter Aysanabee, Toronto rock band The Beaches and Calgary-based singer and dancer Tate Mcrae all garnered multiple awards.

Furtado, a 10-time Juno award winner, will host the awards show for the second since her debut in Saskatoon in 2007. She is also nominated in the dance recording of the year category for Eat Your Man.

At the nominee announceme­nt, Furtado said she’s thrilled to be hosting again. “This is our time to celebrate how important and talented and unstoppabl­e our homegrown talent is and our music scene. I wouldn’t be here without the Juno Awards and the Canadian climate/culture industry,” she said.

Actor and author Elliot Page, who is from Halifax, will present Tegan and Sara with the 2024 Humanitari­an Award and Maestro Fresh Wes, the Ontario-born Godfather of Canadian hip hop, who is now living in Saint John, N.B., will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Halifax entertainm­ent lawyer and artist manager Chip Sutherland will be awarded with the 2024 Walt Grealis Special Achievemen­t Award.

Performanc­es announced so far include The Beaches and Cardin.

Furtado and Wes will be performing as well as Talk, Karan Aujla and Josh Ross.

Besides the big night, Halifax will host a number of Juno-related events including a comedy night, Junofest, songwriter­s circle and an honouring ceremony.
