Playoff implications abound for the Bearcats

- BEARCAT BANTER GERRY HALE news@saltwire.com @Saltwirenetwork

This hasn’t been a good week in the Bearcat nation.

They played a pair of home games against Eastlink North competition and came up short in both.

Last Wednesday, the Miramichi

Timberwolves got off the bus hungry and raring to go. They scored five first period goals, then added two more in the second before the Bearcats responded.

The Bearcats were outgunned in most categories, and far short of the effort required from a team in search of a playoff spot.

Monday, Campbellton placed a second 7-3 win on the Bearcats. The game was fairly even until the third, when the Tigers potted four goals, with limited response.

Granted, the Bearcats came off a road trip leading up to these games, but they must be ready to play, with urgency.

It’s funny how things go. To date, in February, the Bearcats have played five road games, winning four and tying another.

Those nine points kept the Bearcats in contention; however, losing all four home games basically nullified the gains in the standing.

As of Tuesday, the Bearcats, the Crushers and Ramblers all sit with 53 points, three back of the second place Mariners. By March 10, when regular season ends, there is going to be a very unhappy team.

The Bearcats have five games remaining. Wednesday, they host the Amherst Ramblers. This is a must win game, for both.

To date, the Bearcats have won five of the previous seven meetings. They know what they have to do with this one.

Thursday, the Bearcats are in Summerside to face the CJHL’S tenth ranked team.

The Capitals have won four of the previous seven.

No MHL team has played the Capitals tougher than the Bearcats. Truro actually has outscored the Capitals by two goals over the course of their matchups.

How things settle is still in their hands. It’s a matter of getting it done.

The Boston Pizza Bearcat Player-of-the-week was defenceman Jake Beardsmore, who contributed a goal from the back end in the Miramichi game.
