Wyllie gains confidence through sports

- NICK GAINES

Confidence is an important characteristic to Kate Wyllie.

Wyllie is a 15-year-old hockey player from Bible Hill playing as a forward for both the Cobequid Educational Centre (CEC) Cougars girls hockey team and the U18 AA Fundy Highland team. Through playing hockey, she said she has been able to improve her self-confidence and has taught her the meaning of hard work.

She took some time to answer a few of our questions

Q: How long have you been playing hockey?

Wyllie: This is my fifth season playing. I started in U13 but this is my first year playing for CEC.

Q: What position do you play?

Wyllie: I play right wing.

Q: If you could chose a different position what would it be?

Wyllie: Defence, 100 per cent. I started hockey late so I kind of just got put as forward but if I started a bit earlier I would definitely have wanted to play defence. Q: Favourite subject in school? Wyllie: Definitely math or science.

Q: What do you think defines a great team leader?

Wyllie: Confidence. Someone who looks out for the other players.

Q: Best piece of advice you’ve been given by a coach or teammate?

Wyllie: What’s the saying? Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work.

Q: What is your favorite school/team to play against?

Wyllie: Northumberland. Teammates from my Fundy Highland team that I play with, I will play against during high school. It’s fun to play against my teammates.

Q: How has playing on a team influenced your personal growth?

Wyllie: It’s given me a lot of confidence and has taught me how to work hard for stuff. You don’t just get stuff easily, you have to work for it.

Q: Aside from hockey, do you play any other sports?

Wyllie: I play golf, track, badminton. I won regionals this year with CEC golf and I came in sixth or eigth at provincials for golf.

Q: Outside of sports, do you have any hobbies?

Wyllie: Hanging out with my friends, going to the gym. Spending time at the cottage with my family.

Q: What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment on or off the ice?

Wyllie: On the ice, I would say it's going to Atlantics with my Fundy Highland team. Off the ice would be winning athlete of the year last year for Bible Hill Junior High.

Q: What's your go-to shot in hockey?

Wyllie: The wrist shot.

Q: Before or after a game, do you have a favourite meal or go to snack?

Wyllie: Subway.

Q: What are your plans after high school?

Wyllie: I want to be a doctor when I’m older.

Q: Can you share one fun fact about Kate Wyllie that maybe not a lot of people would know?

Wyllie: That I did gymnastics before hockey.
