Musical trio to host fundraising event
TRURO - The musical trio Brigid will be hosting their second-annual International Women's Day event as they fundraise for several worthy causes.
The event, which will take place on Saturday, March 23, at the Cobequid Educational Centre's Portia White Auditorium, will consist of a market featuring womenled businesses and several performances, musical and otherwise.
"It's going to be a big show with different styles of performing," said Beth Terry, one-third of Brigid. "We have dancers, musicians, public speakers, a comedian."
Several draws will also be held during the event. One is for a necklace from Inglis Jewellers. Another is for a guitar from Long and Mcquade. A one-year family pass for the Rath Eastlink Community Centre is also available.
They are also selling tickets in a basket in support of Angie Parker Brown, who passed away last year after her battle with ALS.
"We're covering a lot of bases," said Terry. "Making it as interactive and as community-connected as possible."
All of the money from the show will be going to the Colchester Sexual Assault Centre and Maggie's Place.
Among the performers is Dr. El Jones, a former poet laureate of Halifax and an activist for Black rights and women's rights.
Dr. Karen Ewing will also be present, speaking on women's role in peacekeeping throughout the years.
Cellist Anne Janelle will be making an appearance, as will jingle dancer Patience Sylliboy, comedian Deb Barnhill, and filmmaker Nikita Morris, who will show a short film about the role of Black women in the world of hiphop.
There will also be several youth performers, including Sugar-daisy Torrens, who will be dancing, and singer Sienna Lindsay, who will be joining Brigid in their performance. The Redcliff Choir will also be performing.
"It's a really big variety of performers, different ages, and different aspects of art and community connections," said Terry.
The market begins at 6 p.m., while the show starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at Macquarries Pharmasave in Truro, as well as online at brigidtrio.com.
