Tangled Garden featured in international gardening book
Tangled Garden in Grand Pré has been included in a British publication The Gardener’s Garden, a large compendium of the finest 250 gardens from around the world. Only six gardens were selected in Canada.
Chief gardener Beverly McClare had two reactions to the news: “I’m elated, of course. And deeply humbled.”
McClare was on vacation in the Far East when she learned of the inclusion by a panel of international experts.
“I learned when I got a request for photos from the English publisher,” she recalled.
The lush, five-acre garden was previously featured - along with Tangled Garden herb vinegars, jellies and liqueurs - in a six-page spread in Martha Stewart Magazine in 2013.
The almost 30-year-old garden includes a labyrinth overlooking the Minas Basin and, according to the authors of the book, is defined by McClare’s vision and its productive landscape, along with several tree specimens.
McClare’s “personal vision has created a strong
sense of identity for a garden with a dis- tinctive character, which reminds the visitor of the productive nature of the land: slow food in a soul-filled garden.”
Working with other garden owners across the province, McClare says she is hopeful that tours, not unlike the popular wine tours locally, are being organized and rack cards have been ordered.
Tangled Garden may open on the long weekend in May, but McClare says that depends on the weather. She has 1,000 spring bulbs planted and says she and the staff are working toward spring.
Last year, about 5,000 visitors stopped in at the garden, which is located on Highway 1.
The featured gardens in Canada also include: Abkhazi Garden and Butchart Gardens in Victoria, B.C., Reford Gardens and Les Quatre Vents in Quebec and the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens.
Publisher Phaidon Press describes the 480-page book as “the inspirational resource for all garden designers, both amateur and professional” and notes that the book features “over 250 permanent gardens by leading garden designers, horticulturalists and landscape architects, from the 14th century to the present day.”
