N.S. woman wins new car from Tim Hortons, Best Toyota

- By John DeCoste

Amanda Macdonald is one happy coffee drinker.

The Chester Basin woman is the proud owner of a brand new Toyota Camry, courtesy of the Tim Hortons RRRoll Up The Rim To Win promotion. Macdonald was in Coldbrook April 15 to pick up her new wheels.

The actual winning coffee cup was purchased Feb. 18 in Berwick.

“My boyfriend bought coffee for both of us, and the cup I got came up a winner. It was a couple of hours before we realized.”

Macdonald described herself and her boyfriend, Leigh Rockwell, as “Tim Hortons regulars,” but neither had ever come close to winning a car.

“I’ve won coffee or donuts before, but never anything this major,” she said.

The couple sent the paperwork in two days later. It took a few months to get everything processed for their new car.

“I rolled up the rim, but Leigh bought the coffee. It was a team effort. We won it together, and I plan to share the prize,” she added.

“I couldn’t think of a better person to share it with,” Rockwell added.

Macdonald and Rockwell said they are both “pretty pumped.”

Knowing you’ve won is one thing, but actually taking possession of the vehicle is another thing altogether.

“I really don’t know what to say,” Rockwell said.

The couple has the options of selling the vehicle back to Toyota.

“We’re not sure what we’re going to do,” Macdonald said. “It’s pretty exciting. I needed a new car.”

Fred Falconer is the owner of the Tim Horton’s franchises in Bridgetown, Middleton, Berwick and Coldbrook, where the presentation was held because there was more space than at the Berwick store.

“This is the first time we’ve had a winner here,” Falconer said. “My brother Les has had a couple in New Minas, but this is the first for either Coldbrook or Berwick.”

Falconer described the presentation as “really exciting. It’s not every day you get to give away a new car.

“You take part in these programs, and you hope you might have a winner someday. It’s nice to see someone so genuinely excited, and it’s nice to be able to make someone that happy.”

The vehicle was provided by Best Toyota, as part of a partnership between Toyota Canada and Tim Horton’s that, according to Rob Vincent, Toyota’s Atlantic area sales manager, is now in its 11th year.

“It’s been an awesome partnership,” he said.

Tim Horton’s senior marketing manager, Mark Hinam, confirmed 50 vehicles are given away across Canada each year as part of the promotion, with five of them in Atlantic Canada. This year, the regional winners were in Berwick, St. John’s, Saint John and two in Dartmouth.

As part of the promotion, customers who purchase a small, medium large or extra large hot beverage have a chance to win one of the 50 Toyota Camry XSEs, as well as 100 $5,000 prepaid VISA cards, 100 smart TVs, 25,000 $100 Tim’s Cards and millions of coffee and food prizes.
