Two Glooscap Curling Club members recently advanced to the gold- medal match at the Canadian Senior Women’s Championships.

Coldbrook residents Jill Alcoe- Holland and Andrea Saulnier joined skip Mary Mattatall and third Marg Cutcliffe in travelling to Stratford, Ont. to represent the Lakeshore Curling Club in Sackville in the national tournament spanning March 24-29.

It was a team’s second consecutive trip to nationals, and they had their hearts set on earning a spot in the final from day one.

“We had an amazing tournament, but had a disappointing loss in the gold medal game to Saskatchewan’s Sherry Anderson, the returning champ, in an extra end,” said Alcoe- Holland, the squad’s second, in a recent e-mail.

“We opened the championship with nine straight wins to end up at the top of the standings by the end of the week. We played British Columbia in the first semi- final with a 6- 4 win. The event was held in two arenas in a wonderful facility that had great ice conditions and super hospitality.”

Rising to the top was no easy task. Team Mattatall trailed Ontario 7- 2 after five ends in a round- robin match, but made a resounding comeback late in the game to record a 9-7 win.

“We never gave up and made exceptional shots in the final three ends of the game,” said Alcoe-Holland.

The team appreciated the support from fans at home who took the time to send along well wishes during their time at nationals.

“We were disappointed in the final results because it is a long and hard journey to qualify for the seniors in Nova Scotia and the chance to get in the final game in the nationals is hard to duplicate,” said Alcoe-Holland.

“We are proud of our accomplishments this year and would like to thank family members, friends, club members, and others who sent us messages.”
