‘Scandalous’ amount of litter
Mount Uniacke children doing their part for Earth Day
About a dozen children between the ages of five and 10 gathered at the Mount Uniacke Public Library to help make the community a little greener recently.
Garbage bags in hand, they investigated the library’s perimetre, on the hunt for garbage — and they found a lot, especially since they were only a few metres away from the library’s main entrance.
Bradon Kelly, 10, and Coralee Kelly, 8, were skimming the surrounding foliage for signs of refuse.
“To clean up the earth and make it a better place,” Bradon said, when asked why he was doing it.
“Yeah!” his sister added enthusiastically. Bradon, going through some of the things he’s discovered, said he picked up some flyers, among other items.
Coralee said she found a “big, big, big piece of garbage” as she stretched her arms as wide as they would go.
The event was held as a way for the local library to celebrate Earth Day, which is on April 22.
Branch manager Kim Legge said she was surprised by the amount of garbage around the library.
“It’s ridiculous how much litter there is here and on the side of the road,” Legge said. “It’s a bit scandalous that people do this.”
But, Legge said, she’s encouraged by how enthusiastic the children are when it comes to picking up the garbage.
“They’re really loving it. Some of them have made it into an investigation — each piece of garbage has a story to it,” she said. “It’s kind of fun listening to them do this. We have a great group of kids here that always joins in.”
