Rhys Bevan-John began his oneman theatre show, the library’s special program in August, by telling the 40-plus children and adults that “Imagination is like a muscle — it gets stronger the more that you use it”.

And, indeed, this was a muscle that was well exercised by the audience throughout his performance.

The main character was the Happy Hobo who travels to Moon Land to rescue Pan, imprisoned in a dungeon by a dragon. Along the way, the detailed masks, costumes, music and sound effects made the various characters come vividly alive.

Bevan-John also had the audi- ence laughing with his evocative and humorous descriptions of a bad smell, which was like a “swimming pool full of barf,” and as if a “dog pooped out rotten eggs.”

There was lots of audience interaction as they helped to create the atmosphere of the forest with wind blowing, bird singing and wolf howling, and to chase the dragon away by roaring like lions. Afterwards the children had a closer look at the props as Bevan-John answered questions.

Although this was the last of the library’s three special events, there are still Tech Makers: LEGO Mindstorms Robotics on Aug 16, from 2-3:15 p.m. and Kids Tech – MakerLab on Aug. 23 from 2-3:15 p.m., as well as one-on-one tech help 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Thursdays in three one-hour slots. Call 902-542-3005 or go online for more details and to sign up.

At Prescott House on Aug. 15 from 1-3 p.m., kids age five and up can join Dr. Todd Smith from Acadia for an afternoon of examining ants, beetles, earwigs, bees and other creeping critters. Cost: $8. To register, call 902-542-3984.
