New Minas to host 50th anniversary celebration Sept. 1
Although New Minas was originally founded in 1682 by the Acadians, the village didn’t officially incorporate until Sept. 1, 1968. To mark this 50th anniversary, the Village of New Minas is planning a grand celebration.
Instead of having New Minas Celebration Days in August, as per tradition, Malcolm Anderson, the recreation and community development intern who is helping co-ordinate the event, says they wanted to make sure this year’s events were especially memorable, so they moved the date to Sept. 1 to coincide with the actual birthday.
The schedule for the day is still evolving, but many of the activities will take place throughout the afternoon. There will be the usual face painting, soap slide, barbecue and bounce castles. New this year, they’ve lined up additional performers, food trucks, a Nova Scotian author meet and greet sponsored by Coles, and free axe throwing.
“Without a doubt, the event that really takes people’s breath away is the fireworks show. This year we have pulled out all the stops and are looking forward to an especially amazing show,” says Anderson.
There is something for everyone at the New Minas 50th Birthday Celebration Days, he adds.
“Between the children’s activities, axe throwing, and the author meet and greet, we are confident that everyone will have a great time.”
New Minas Celebration Days will run from Sept. 1 at 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. in Lockhart Ryan Park. Admission is free. On Sept. 1, New Minas will be holding it’s 50th Birthday Celebration days from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. in Lockhart Ryan Park.
