Sowerby, Min­nie Blanche (Beals) — 1928-2018, for­merly of Lakeville, Kings County, passed away on Sun­day, Nov. 25, 2018 in the Val­ley Re­gional Hos­pi­tal, Kentville. Born in Mid­dle­ton, she was a daugh­ter of the late Les­lie and Pearl (Bal­com) Beals of Truro. She was pre­de­ceased by a brother, Alan of Belleville; and a sis­ter, Phyl­lis of Truro. She ob­tained her RN, grad­u­at­ing from Monc­ton Hos­pi­tal Train­ing School in 1949. Fol­low­ing post-graduate stud­ies at the Jersey City Med­i­cal Cen­tre, she held su­per­vi­sory po­si­tions in the op­er­at­ing room in Truro and Monc­ton. She later worked for the Depart­ment of Veterans Af­fairs in Ot­tawa and Hal­i­fax. She be­longed to the Monc­ton Hos­pi­tal School of Nurs­ing Alum­nae and was a for­mer mem­ber of the Pro­fes­sional In­sti­tute of Canada. Upon re­tire­ment, she and her hus­band, Robert, built their re­tire­ment home abut­ting Sil­ver Lake in Lakeville and win­tered in Braden­ton, Florida, for many years. In Florida, Min­nie was an ac­tive mem­ber of the Flori­dana’s Shuf­fle and Women’s Groups. As an ac­tive mem­ber of the Bill­town Bap­tist Church, she was a mem­ber of the choir and be­longed to the Jean Rush­ton Aux­il­iary and the Women’s Mis­sion­ary So­ci­ety as well as be­ing an ac­tive mem­ber and sup­porter of the Lakeville Women’s In­sti­tute. She was also a for­mer mem­ber of Ken-Wo Golf and Coun­try Club and the Glooscap Curl­ing Club. She is sur­vived by her hus­band, Robert; daugh­ter, Deb­o­rah (Dou­glas Owen), Fall River and a son, David (Colleen), Bonita Springs, Florida; grand­sons, Michael (Kristy Marie), Bonita Springs, Florida and Blake (HeYan); a great-grand­son, Ivan, Nashville. There was no vis­i­ta­tion, by re­quest. A pri­vate fam­ily burial took place in the Lake­view Ceme­tery, Lakeville. A cel­e­bra­tion of her life, with re­cep­tion, was held at 2 p.m., Wed­nes­day Nov. 28, 2018 in the White Fam­ily Fu­neral Home, Kentville, Pas­tor Chris John­ston of­fi­ci­at­ing.
