Pair arrested in Highway 101 gun incident appear in court
The two men arrested after an early-morning incident on Highway 101 Dec. 11 that saw a firearm discharged have appeared in Kentville provincial court.
Dhari Salman Shalaan, 26, of Dartmouth, is charged with assaulting an RCMP officer, obstructing a peace officer and escaping lawful custody.
Treyton Alexander Marsman, 20, of Lakeside, is charged with obstructing a peace officer.
Information filed with the court shows that the RCMP officer was investigating a possible instance of impaired driving, and Marsman allegedly provided a false name.
Shalaan pleaded guilty in 2012 to two charges of assault with a weapon in relation to an attempted murder in Spryfield when a 15-year-old boy was stabbed at a bus stop at Queen Square in Dartmouth in 2009, according to court documents.
The 26-year-old also was sentenced in May 2014 to three years in federal prison for two weapons-related charges, one count of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, two counts of breaching probation and one count of possession of stolen property.
This past April, Shalaan was sentenced to 45 days in a federal prison for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Shalaan is to appear in Halifax provincial court on Jan. 8 for allegedly illegally transporting cannabis in a vehicle on Nov. 9 in Halifax.
The two are not expected to appear before the judge for some time, after they have met with a defence lawyer.
The highway was closed down for more than a day after the incident. Shalaan fled the scene after a traffic stop at 4 a.m., and was arrested a couple hours later after the RCMP emergency response team arrived.
