Avon View students, teachers break for holidays

- The Avon View Voice

The staff and students at Avon View High School have been as busy as Santa’s elves. By the time you read this, we will have started our Christmas break, but we want you to know what we have been up to and what is planned for the new year.

The Options and Opportunities program finds ways to both challenge students and help out the community.

Students from this program, headed by Sean Connolly, have been working at New Boundaries in Windsor, helping clients stack wood. They also partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to load donations to be distributed to those who need a hand this holiday season O2 students also helped prepare a celebration dinner for the clients of Harvest House.

AV fared well in the archery provincials, held earlier in November. There were 30 shooters from the school. The top three male division prizes were awarded to AV students. Cameron Conners won first (prize: new bow and $1,500 scholarship), Dylan McKinney took second place ($1,000 scholarship) and Chris Daniels placed third ($600 scholarship). Their scores, along with the scores of Dimitri Church and Brandon Benedict, were averaged for the team score and once again AV retained the provincial title. Throughout the five scoring categories, other AV archers who medaled were Madison Armstrong, Kendalyn Benedict, Fraser Murray, Liam Jackson, and Raff de Andrade.

Avon View’s track team is preparing for the season with some new talent in the coaching department Ian Shaw has led the team for several years and is pleased to be joined by Greg Wile and Harley Gray. Together, these coaches are hoping to build the repertoire of events: they are looking for students interested in throwing categories such as javelin, discus and shot-put. All runners are welcome as well.

If you know of someone who might be able to coach a wrestling team here at AV, please ask them to stop by. The individual should be ready to lead our team from the start of the season in October, to its end in March.

We invite you to come to Avon View on Feb. 9 to enjoy a pancake breakfast. This event is a fundraiser sponsored by the Safe Grad committee.

Classes resume on Jan. 3. Students will have an early dismissal on Jan. 16 and exams will be held from Jan. 18-31.
