Here are a few of my favourite things

The holiday season comes once a year, so make it about what you like

- Paula Huntley

Decorating for Christmas is possibly my favourite thing to do. I get to go to my five storage units and choose from my large props — these are the ones I am in love with but don’t get to use — like a six-foot nutcracker that lights up, a momma deer and her baby which is about five feet, with antlers, and two large four-foot lanterns with ribbon hanging from the handles.

And if I mix this with loads of greenery in outside urns or fireplace mantles, I am satisfied.

One of the things I like to do all year is look for different props, something that I can incorporate to jazz up a focal point, and this year it is top hats for urns, tree tops and fireplaces.

Traditional, whimsical or just plain bold jewel tones with a mix of anything goes — it’s all in. And how is this possible? Well, you see, that is the beauty of Christmas. Besides the spiritual side, family gatherings, all of the entertaining and food, the season is all about using what you love. And if it means mixing up all of the things you love, so be it.

For those curious about what colours are in for the season, your go-to of red and green is still at the top of the list; gold and silver are mixed together for shine and yes, even black is quite the addition.

At the end of the day, the holiday season comes once a year, so make it about what you like.

And what are some of my favourite things? (I am asked many times over about this and even when I am shopping I have people approach me for my opinion on things they are looking at. I love that.) Here is a partial list:

Black feather wreaths to add what I want as an accessory.

Cake plates — stacked one on top of each other with fake snow and stacked with owls or mini deer.

Large snow flakes. Reindeer: I will use large ones for table centrepieces with greenery.

I hope you enjoy your decorating ritual, whatever that may be. And take pictures when you are finished so you can use it next year for guidance — whether you want to go with the same thing or something completely different.
