Murder charges adjourned until mid-July
Charges against two people accused of murdering a Falmouth man in May 2020 have been adjourned until mid-July so their lawyers can review the evidence against them.
Rebecca Elizabeth Moir,
37, of Five Islands, Colchester County, and Brandon Michael Doucette, 28, of L’Ardoise, Richmond County, appeared in Kentville provincial court June 22 via video links from jail.
Both are charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Robert Campbell, criminal negligence causing death, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm.
Moir also faces a charge of breaching a firearms prohibition, while Doucette is accused of discharging a firearm and pointing a firearm.
The defence lawyers told Judge Ronda van der Hoek they need to examine the evidence before they can accurately estimate how many days will be required for a preliminary inquiry.
Dates for an inquiry are expected to be set when the case returns to court July 13.
RCMP arrested four people last month in connection with the May 24, 2020, death of Campbell, who was 51.
Police responded early that morning to a home invasion on Ridge Road in Melanson. The suspects were seen leaving the area in a grey van.
At about 7 a.m. that day, Campbell’s body was found in a burned-out van in St. Croix,
Hants County, that matched the description of the vehicle involved in the home invasion.
Two Kings County men — Darroll Murray Atwell,
42, of Robinson Corner and Devyn Adam Dennis, 26, of Bishopville — are charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder, break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, interfering with human remains and arson.
Atwell and Dennis’s charges are due back in provincial court Aug. 3. They were both granted bail in Nova Scotia Supreme Court.
Defence lawyer Scot Stanfield told the judge June 22 that Doucette plans to apply for bail as well.
