Musical comedy coming to CentreStage
The Last Resort full of ‘sharp one-liners and catchy tunes’
CentreStage Theatre is set to do something it hasn’t done since 2017 – produce a musical.
The Last Resort is a musical comedy with a who-done-it element. It has 10 shows coming up in March at the Kentville theatre.
“Having not produced a musical since December 2017, CentreStage is ready to dive into this genre again, under the very capable hands of its professional direction and musical direction team,” CentreStage vice-chairperson Mike Butler said in a news release.
It stars Melanie Clouthier, Spencer Laing, Mariana Svobodova, Jennifer MacDonald, Owen O’Brien, Emma Van Rooyen, Billie Ekris, and Claire Newberry. Reid Spencer is the director while music direction is by Ari Snyder. The Last Resort is a collaboration between
playwright, Norm Foster, Canada’s most produced and composer Leslie Arden, who provides music and lyrics.
The CentreStage crew have performed many of Foster’s shows, including The Long Weekend, Halfway There, Old Love, Jonas and Barry in the Home.
“And with The Last Resort, they should expect the playwright’s trademark mixture of wry humour with a touch of social commentary,” Butler said.
The Last Resort is set in a remote lodge in rural Saskatchewan and follows the trail of Nikkie Galeazzo, a New York restaurateur on the run from the mob. Accompanied by her FBI escort, Galeazzo spends her time avoiding perceived threats from other quirky hotel residents and the scheme of its oddball owner.
“The show is filled with sharp one-liners and catchy tunes and bridges multiple genres from comedy to murder-mystery and it’s sure to delight audiences,” Butler said. “Be prepared to laugh and tap your toes. This incredibly talented cast has been working for months to get this song, dance, multi-genre
CentreStage production ready for an audience and is very excited to fill the seats for the run.”
