CONDITIONA­L SENTENCE WITH HOUSE ARREST

Travis William Brown, 35, of Canaan, will serve a period of imprisonme­nt in the community after pleading guilty to three charges.

They include engaging in conduct that caused an individual to reasonably, in all the circumstan­ces, fear for their safety or for the safety of anyone known to them; failing to comply with probation; and failing to comply with a condition of a release order, to have no direct or indirect contact or communicat­ion with two individual­s and to remain away from any place of residence, employment, or

frequented schooling known to be by those individual­s.

Brown pleaded guilty to the harassment and probation charges on Jan. 2 and confirmed an earlier guilty plea to the release order charge. The matters were adjourned to Feb. 29 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek handed Brown an 18-month conditiona­l sentence order on the three charges. Brown will serve house arrest for the first nine months, to be followed by daily curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. for the remaining time. Brown has also been sentenced to 14 months of probation.

Brown committed the offences in Mount Pearl, Newfoundla­nd and Labrador, between Aug. 3 and 5 and between Aug. 21 and 23, 2021. Another count of failing to comply with a condition of a release order and another count of failing to comply with probation were withdrawn on Feb. 29.

FINED FOR IMPAIRED DRIVING

Barry Abraham Jackson Parker, 20, of Coldbrook, has been fined for having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit within two hours of ceasing to operate a conveyance.

Parker pleaded guilty to the charge on March 4. Judge Angela Caseley fined Parker $1,500 and imposed a oneyear driving prohibitio­n against him.

Parker committed the offence in Coldbrook on Aug. 24, 2023. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Parker gave blood alcohol readings of 160 and 150.

A charge of operating a conveyance while his ability to do so was impaired to any degree by alcohol or a drug or both was withdrawn on March 4.

RELEASE ORDER OFFENCE

Christophe­r Charles Turnbull, 45, of Lockhartvi­lle, has been sentenced to probation for failing to comply with a condition of a release order.

Turnbull pleaded guilty to the charge on March 5. Judge Angela Caseley sentenced Turnbull to 15 months of probation.

Turnbull committed the offence in Lockhartvi­lle between June 1 and Nov. 18, 2023. Another count of failing to comply with a condition of a release order was withdrawn on March 5.

FEDERAL SENTENCE FOR MULTIPLE OFFENCES

Corrigan Bezanson, 23, of Aylesford, has been handed a federal sentence after pleading guilty to several offences.

They include possessing a restricted weapon, a .22 calibre Ruger revolver and ammunition, without an authorizat­ion or licence; possessing a restricted weapon, a switch blade, without being the holder of a licence under which he may possess it; carrying a firearm, a .22 calibre Lugar revolver, in a careless manner; wounding an individual, thereby committing aggravated assault; failing to comply with a condition of a release order, to not possess any weapon as defined by the Criminal Code; uttering a

death threat to an individual and RCMP officers; having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit within two hours of ceasing to operate a conveyance; and operating a conveyance while his ability to do so was impaired to any degree by alcohol or a drug or both. Bezanson was also fined for another count of having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit within two hours of ceasing to operate a conveyance.

Bezanson pleaded guilty to the charges on Feb. 1 and March 7. On March 7, after taking into considerat­ion time spent remanded in custody, Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Bezanson to a total of four years and 201 days in federal custody going forward on eight of the charges.

Bezanson was fined $1,500 on the second count of having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit. The court imposed a total four-year driving prohibitio­n against Bezanson.

Bezanson committed the offences in New Minas on Sept. 14, 2022; Oct. 21, 2023, and Jan. 3, 2024; in Harrietsfi­eld on Oct. 10, 2022; and in Somerset on Oct. 15, 2022.

The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Bezanson gave blood alcohol readings of 90 and 80; and 150 and 140.

Another 11 charges were withdrawn on March 7. They include two more counts of possessing a restricted weapon knowing he was not the holder of a licence under which he may possess it; carrying a concealed weapon while not being authorized to do so under the Firearms Act; four counts of failing to comply with a condition of a release order; removing a serial number from a firearm; uttering a death threat to RCMP officers; another count of operating a conveyance while his ability to do so was impaired to any degree by alcohol or a drug or both; and operating a conveyance while his ability to do so was impaired by alcohol.

JAIL TIME FOR BREAK AND ENTER

Bailey Matthew Hall, 26, of Wolfville, has been sentenced to jail time and probation after pleading guilty to three charges.

They include breaking and entering a house and committing the indictable offence of mischief therein; committing mischief by willfully damaging the property of the Kentville Library to a value not exceeding $5,000; and failing to comply with probation.

Hall changed his plea to guilty to the break and enter charge on Oct. 19, 2023, and pleaded guilty to the mischief and probation charges on Nov. 7, 2023. The matters were adjourned to March 7 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Hall to eight months in custody on the break and enter charge and the court granted a primary DNA order.

Hall was sentenced to 15 days in custody, to be served concurrent­ly, on the mischief charge and one day in custody

probation deemed served on the charge. Hall was also sentenced to two years of probation on the three charges.

Hall committed the offences in Wolfville on April 1, 2022, and in Kentville on March 27, 2023. Four more charges were dismissed on March 7. They include failing to comply with a condition of an undertakin­g; failing to attend court in accordance with an appearance notice; and two more counts of failing to comply with probation.

JAIL TIME FOR MULTIPLE OFFENCES

Jeffery Edward Douglas Keddy, 31, of Waterville, has been sentenced to jail time and probation after pleading guilty to six charges.

They include using a weapon in committing an assault; assaulting a peace officer engaged in the execution of his duty; two counts of assault; willfully resisting two members of the Kentville Police Service engaged in the execution of their duty; and uttering a death threat.

Keddy pleaded guilty to the charges on March 7.

After considerin­g time spent remanded in custody, Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek sentenced Keddy to a total of 49 days in jail going forward on the six charges. Keddy was also sentenced to 18 months of probation on the six charges.

Keddy committed the offences in Kentville on Dec. 30 and in North Kentville on July 8, 2023. A charge of committing mischief by willfully damaging property to a value not exceeding $5,000 by punching a hole in the wall of an individual’s residence was withdrawn on March 7.

FINED FOR IMPAIRED DRIVING

Mackenzie Reeves, 27, of Wolfville, has been fined for having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit within two hours of ceasing to operate a conveyance.

Reeves pleaded guilty to the charge on March 6. Judge Angela Caseley fined Reeves $2,000 and imposed an 18month driving prohibitio­n against him.

Reeves committed the offence in Casey Corner on Nov. 7, 2023. The legal blood alcohol limit is 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood. Reeves gave blood alcohol readings of 230 and 220.

A charge of operating a conveyance while his ability to do so was impaired by alcohol was withdrawn on March 6.

IMPAIRED DRIVING LEADS TO FINE

Maria Brown, 21, of Kentville, has been fined for operating a conveyance while her ability to do so was impaired to any degree by alcohol or a drug or both.

Brown changed her plea to guilty on Feb. 1. The matter was adjourned to March 7 for sentencing.

Judge Ronda Van Der Hoek fined Brown $1,500 and imposed a one-year driving prohibitio­n against her.

Brown committed the offence in Wolfville on Jan. 13, 2023. A charge of having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit within two hours of ceasing to operate a conveyance was dismissed on March 7.

CONDITIONA­L DISCHARGE FOR ASSAULT

Michael Allan Markle, 60, of Kentville, has been handed a conditiona­l discharge with probation for committing an assault.

Markle pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 12, 2023. The matter was adjourned to March 6 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing.

Judge Angela Caseley handed Markle a conditiona­l discharge with 15 months of probation. Markle committed the offence in Kentville on Oct. 21, 2023.

WILLFULLY DAMAGED PROPERTY

Joshua Crossman, 31, of North Kentville, has been handed a conditiona­l discharge with probation for willfully damaging the property of Acadia University to a value not exceeding $5,000.

Crossman pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 13, 2023. The matter was adjourned to March 6 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing. Judge Angela Caseley handed

FINED FOR IMPAIRED DRIVING

Devin Kyle Jacquard, 22, of South Chegoggin, has been fined for having a blood alcohol concentrat­ion that was equal to or exceeded the legal limit within two hours of ceasing to operate a conveyance.

Jacquard pleaded guilty to the charge on March 6. Judge Angela Caseley fined Jacquard $1,000 and imposed a one-year driving prohibitio­n against him.

Wood pleaded guilty to the charge on Dec. 13, 2023. The matter was adjourned to March 6 to allow time for a pre-sentence report to be prepared and for sentencing. Judge Angela Caseley handed Wood a conditiona­l discharge with 14 months of probation.
