city hall job San­dra Singh was awarded last De­cem­ber doesn’t sound that in­tim­i­dat­ing: gen­eral man­ager of arts, cul­ture and com­mu­nity ser­vices. But that ti­tle dis­guises a raft of com­plex is­sues that she’ll have to deal with: ev­ery­thing from home­less­ness to rec­on­cil­i­a­tion with In­dige­nous groups to child care to the bal­let and pub­lic art. But the 40-some­thing Singh im­pressed many at city hall with her po­ten­tial to grap­ple with all that dur­ing her eight years as head of the Van­cou­ver Pub­lic Li­brary, with her team-build­ing abil­i­ties and her ca­pac­ity for lis­ten­ing qui­etly be­fore weigh­ing in. She did a lot with a tight bud­get, in­tro­duc­ing things like the In­spi­ra­tion Lab, which gives li­brary pa­trons space and equip­ment for dig­i­tal pro­duc­tions and sto­ry­telling.
