Vancouver man wanted in shootings of students
One man shot in face, another 10 times after fight in karaoke bar bathroom
OTTAWA — Minutes after being separated following a meaningless fight in a karaoke bar’s bathroom, a man police say gunned down two Chinese students could have walked away. Instead, he pulled out a handgun.
Ottawa police Thursday launched a manhunt for Jackie Wei, a 27- year- old Vancouver man they believe repeatedly shot and killed Algonquin College students and best friends Tailang Liu and Linhai Tian, both 20, inside the Fullhouse Karaoke and Bubble Tea on Somerset Street West shortly after 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 6.
Wei, who police consider armed and dangerous, is wanted on a Canada- wide arrest warrant for two counts of first- degree murder.
Although he does not have a criminal record in Canada, Ottawa police said Wei is known to the Vancouver police. They would not elaborate on the nature of his past involvement with the authorities, or how long he has been in Canada.
Police also wouldn’t comment on why he was believed to be in Ottawa at the time of the shooting.
Wei, whose full name is Fu Kwok Wei, is known to travel extensively and may have left Ottawa or the country, police conceded.
“ He is a frequent flyer,” said Ottawa police Staff Sgt. Dave Lengacher, adding police have sent his picture to police departments coast to coast in an effort to locate the man.
“ Obviously, he is potentially armed, he is potentially dangerous, he is wanted for two murders,” he said
Fullhouse Karaoke and Bubble Tea co-owner Ye Tian, 25, said the fight that led to the fatal shooting started between Tian and another group of men near the bar’s only washroom.
Following that dispute, which was broken up by Ye Tian’s business partner, Sky Shi, Linhai Tian then returned to the birthday party he was attending in a private room and met up with Liu. The two victims then confronted the men and got into a heated argument in the lobby area that ended with a man following them into the private room and opening fire on the two victims. Liu was shot in the face, while Tian was shot at least 10 times.
