There will be no surrender; ramp up the war on drugs

-

Re: Hallelujah! Canadians agree it’s time to legalize marijuana, Column, Jan. 18

“Let’s face up to it, Canada, the war on drugs has been a complete bust,” said Bob Rae. The “war on drugs” is not a war; it is a collection of soft policies and it has failed badly. Do we surrender and give in? No way, let there be a war on drugs.

Bring in tougher policies, impose heavy sentences for those who deal in drugs, those who bring death and misery. Expand detox and treatment centres for all drug users. Let us help them to get rid of drugs, not to accommodate their desire. Drug users are victims, not criminals.

Drugs are drugs, period. There is no difference if they are soft drugs or hard drugs. They are a curse to our nation. If we legalize marijuana, what will be next, heroin? Crack?

We are a strong people. Let us unite and fight the war on drugs and not give in and surrender. I do not think God will approve legalizing marijuana. LAWRENCE LIM Richmond
