BRINA DERKSEN- BERGEN

UBC volleyball player Brina Derksen- Bergen was named the Canada West Athletics Association female athlete of the week. Derksen- Bergen, of Abbotsford, nabbed the award after getting 26 assists in each of the Thunderbirds’ wins over Brandon last weekend. She also had five blocks in Friday’s straight- sets win and three blocks in another sweep on Saturday.

MICHAEL GARTEIG

The 20- year- old Penticton Vees goaltender stopped 20 shots in a 7- 0 shutout against the Chilliwack Chiefs on Tuesday as the Vees’ established a new B. C. Hockey League record with their 30th consecutive victory. Garteig, who has an NCAA scholarship waiting for him at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, sports a 36- 4 record with a minuscule 1.88 goals- against average and .931 save percentage
